History
A Houston Skyline Fixture
Houston House opened its doors in early 1966 to much fanfare. The 404 unit (396 currently), 31 story building had a long list of amenities that appealed to its “young executive” demographic including a uniformed doorman, maid service, private club, swimming pool, and available fully furnished apartments featuring air-conditioning. Lease prices were modestly set from $125 to $700.
Houston House began with a construction announcement in 1964 by the Lumbermen Investment Corporation of Austin, who planned on building the tallest residential high-rise in downtown Houston at that time. Prominent Washington D.C. architect Charles M. Goodman, who also master planned Greenway Plaza, was selected to design the $8 million project. Over the course of two years, downtown’s skyline changed slowly as each floor was added to Houston House. Today, the mid-century tower still stands strong.
